Department of Botany

The Botany Department was established in 1954. Formerly it was affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad State as an intermediate college of Arts & Science. It is the First department in Marathwada region before establishment of Marathwada University in 1985. Numerous students learn from this department & most of the students are working in various services of State & Central Govt. & some students are fully engaged in Research Institutes, Private Organizations & different companies & also abroad.

Currently now Dr. Sulochana R. Rathod is Head & Assistant Professorof the department.
The students passed out from this department have got opportunities in various fields of Life Science like Forestry, Agriculture, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Environment, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Taxonomy, Forensic Science & Plant Tissue Culture Industry.
Achievement of Departments: In academic year 2013-2014 Botany Department had arranged events which was sponsored by UGC-WRO Pune.
1. State Level Workshop conducted on 27th & 28th October 2013 on “Biodiversity in Plants”.
2. National Level Conference was organized on 27th & 28th December 2013 on “Recent advances in Biotechnology for Sustainable Development in Agriculture”.
3. Workshop on “Hands on training on Tissue Culture technology”in December 2016.

In Department the Faculties have different Specializations such as Plant Pathology, Plant Taxonomy& Cytogenetic & Plant Breeding and Phycology.

PLANT OF THE WEEK

Plant of the Week activity was organised on 21st September 2017 for the student of B. sc. The objective of this activity is to impart knowledge about medicinal plants and to identify the plant. Uses of plant and their medicinal properties is displayed on the chart. A living plant is displayed in the front gate. Information like common name, Botanical name, Family and the part used is written on the chart along with medicinal uses. This activity will help all student having botany subject as well as other student also who can use these plant for medicinal uses.

Every week students from first year B.Sc  will change the plant and thus in a duration of one year during academic session about 15-20 plants will be displayed.

This program was held near front gate of the college and Dr.Kumud  GoreKherdekarinaugrated the activity. Dr. SeemaBodkhe introduced the activity to the audience. Head of the department Dr. SulochanaRathod, Dr. Rajesh Raut, Mr. Y. P. Malche and Dr.  N.F. Sheikh  from department were present for the inaugration. Student from botany as well as other students also actively participated in the program.

 

“CONSERVATION AND PROPOGATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS”

Students of B.Sc.I planted some medicinal plants.Piece of land of 10ft*10 ft was allocated to a  Groups of ten students. They were asked to propogate medicinal plants in that area. Studentspropogated number of medicinal plants in the garden. The plants selected were Aloe vera, Azadhiractaindica, Ocimumsativum, Turmeric, Ginger, Adulsa, Marigold, and many more. The plants are growing very well in the garden.  Students are taking care of the plants.
